apparently the truck driver had to be taken to hospital with head injuries....im guessing from headbutting the steering wheel or windshield.....that cant have been a gentle slow down
*update

How do you not realize the dump is up? And how on earth did the sign stand its ground?

probably the truck had to pull forward as raising, and well kept going forward. or a very poorly placed switch.

The college I went to use those roll on/roll off dumpsters all over campus. One morning a truck came, dropped off a fresh dumpster, and picked up the full one. Except once they got it rigged up, the lift wouldn’t go down. The operator called his company and they were like “It’s early (li ke 4:30 AM), nobody is around, just drive it back to the site here very carefully and we’ll fix it. ”
So that’s what he did... except there was a pedestrian bridge between a parking garage and a building and he thought he had clearance... thought. He ended up smashing out the supports under the bridge. Somehow it didn’t collapse, but they had to close it down for like a month while they rebuild the supports.
I guess what I’m suggesting is maybe he knew it was up but thought it would clear?

Physically getting thrown into the windshield is unlikely. The tractor cantilevered onto it’s nose causing significant damage to the entire front end.
More than likely he hit the roof!

Well in the story at my college, the truck owner told the driver to bring it back in. But I see your point. I like to think if I were in that situation I’d wait for help to arrive rather than risk it.

We’d all like to think but situations are rarely so ideal.
For instance, helping my friend stupidly overload a Uhaul with damp lumber f or his Eagle Scout project, we saw the crazy camber on the front wheels the load induced and still drove it. No permanent damage but the wheels very well could have fallen off at speed. No real alternative given how far we had to transport it so we pressed on, slowly.

Trust me, I’ve made lots of dumb decisions in the past. I make fewer now, I think, but I’m not immune.

I think the general rule is anything except streetlights and metal lane dividers meant to absorb energy are best to aim away from unless lives will be lost.

How is your lackluster attempt to find a dignified shitbox worthy of our praise coming along?
Since I started r i ding only a road bike my crashes have been intentionally less frequent. That skin tight clothing is not cheap and the bike parts actually don’t respond very well to being knocked about. Avoiding incident with vehicles no doubt weighs heavily as well. Somehow I suspect complaining to you about living somewhere too flat for owning a mtb isn’t going work out.
